In todays world we need a password to access our bank accounts and all private accounts etc. But for the early Christians hiding in the catacombs for fear of their very lives they were inspired to make The Sign of The Cross, so that anyone coming into their “hiding place would identify himself by this very sign….and be found to be friend or foe….I have always had a great sense of identity by this very sign, more of a symbol of how loved we all are. And each time we make this sign we are blessing ourselves. Thank you Bruce .

That is a lovely way to interpret the Sign of the Cross. I interpret it as,
‘Whatever I do and whoever I am, may it be informed by the Father who is my Creator, Jesus, the Son who is my Redeemer, and the Holy Spirit who lives in me and animates me.’

Surprisingly I am not Catholic but the Apostles Creed recited in the Methodist Church as a child mentioned the catholic church, communion of saints and so on. This was in Cullman, Alabama, home of the Ave Maria Grotto, built by Brother Joseph. All Catholics, I guess, have heard of the Grotto. And down the road in Hanceville, Al, is Mother Angelica’s Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament. It is a most Holy Place. My favorite prayer learned from my Catholic Friend is “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus.” The Power of His Holy Name. Perhaps I am Catholic and just don’t know it. I know God Loves Me and I know where 2 or more are gathered in My Name, there is Church. Thank you, Bruce, and thank you Jesus, Jesus, Jesus.

I too will never mindlessly make The Sign of The Cross again. How refreshing to be able to perform that gesture with new meaning and purpose as well as serve as a reminder of the Holy Trinity. Never in 12 years of Catholic school did I learn that lovely way of interpreting it. Also Bruce you have given me a wonderful new response for those occasional non- Catholics that sometimes criticize the gesture.
